WK1 Comment to Classmates Post 1

Bill Harris's Blog with my comment

Week 1: Reading Entry

I thought I knew a little something about Copyright until I went through the lessons on Copyright. I then found I knew little about copyright and learn the something. I had seen the “What the Heck is Copyright” before and had a good understanding of its application or so I thought. I had assumed that copyright was there to protect the copyright owner from having his or her intellectual property stolen from them by denial of proceeds due them. In fact as Peter Jaszi says, Copyright exist for one purpose: “to promote the progress of science and useful arts”.  He further goes on to say, which makes perfect sense, that Art doesn’t come from nowhere. Cultural progress depends on the ability of artists to make reasonable use of preexisting material and that includes copyrighted material”. How obvious is that! It reminds me of another saying, “There is nothing new under the sun”.

As I see it, a study of music genres, reveals various genres merging with others from different time periods to create a “new” genre, only to have to revert to another at another time period. Its as though in order to avoid copyright infringement a “mix” of genres are created to create something so called “original”. Adding a sesame seed bun, special sauce, a different type of lettuce, and cooked another way than fried does change what it is…it’s still a burger. But without the original you can’t have the modifications that some people may want.

Even though Mr. Jaszi’s point is well taken, I can’t help but feel that we here in the United States make such a big thing over copyright to protect our money and not the art. Other countries as “Copyright issues, part 1 stresses seem to consider the arts more than the profit made. I believe in one scene a young music producer said that musicians were more interested in getting their popularity up by having their music mixed and played at parties and clubs so they could perform in concerts and make real money.

I now see that copyright does in fact support and protect the Arts (in legal terms) by allowing the use of “somebody else’s copyrighted music, pictures or words without paying or asking permission as long as it benefits society more than it hurts the copyright holder.”

  1. I too thought I knew a little something about copyright. It never occurred to me that copyright was there to actually support the arts. I think that this is because the emphasis has always been on the money and not the arts. The United States is too concerned about money. If the money could be left out of the picture, our arts could really grow, spread, and maybe even create something new in the process. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about copyright!

MAC_Wk1_Reading:Copyright

WOW! There is a lot more to copyright than I thought. I had no idea about the public domain nor fair use. It makes sense but it is a lot to take-in in just a few short days. Here is what I understand from watching the videos...PLEASE correct me if I am wrong! Ideas cannot be protected by copyright law, only the form in which the work was made is protected (i.e., the song, movie, art, etc.).

Is every work that you make already copyrighted or do you have to ask for the copyright for it to be copyrighted? I think that you don’t have to do anything for it to be copyrighted but that doesn’t sound right.

Copyright has nothing to do with using someone’s work....it has everything to do with having PERMISSION to use their work. If they give you permission to use it, it does not matter how you use their work because you have their permission to use it.

So, I had a light bulb moment when learning about fair use... Full Sail has taught us to cover our backs using fair use without us even knowing! How many of you have placed, “All clips used in this video are intended for educational purposes only.” at the end of your videos? If I understand it correctly, placing this in our video ensures all who watch it that we are not intending to use the video for any other purpose but to teach...which falls under fair use. You can’t claim fair use like you could claim copyright of your work. Fair use is there to support you in court if needed.

Creative Commons license allows you to easily share your work with the public. The Internet has made it possible to easily let people know what level of permission they have to use your work. The symbols of the creative commons license all tell the general public how you will let people use your work. I never thought about how beneficial this is to preserving our culture. It saddens me to know that great works of history are no longer available because their copyright has expired. I think that it is truly amazing that Creative Commons has made it possible for us to share our work so that we may try to prevent this from happening in the future.

Reflection of this assignment:
I had difficulty viewing my classmates RILS on educator Studio. I could see that they had created one on the home page, but every time I clicked on one to view it, it asked me to sign in. I was able to view Cyndee's RILS on Educator Studio. However, I was unable to view a current classmate's RILS on Educator Studio. Since the assignment asked for me to comment on my classmates, I have substituted a blog comment for my second RILS. I will continue trying to view classmate's RILS on EducatorStudio and update my blog accordingly.

Final Project -RILS

Check out my RILS.

Relevant and Innovative Learning Scenario
Rebecca Stuart
Brief Overview:
Using a previously created website, the students will learn how to add new pages of information to their website. They will be using this new page to create a space to talk about their favorite thing. The students will be able to add pictures and video to create a fun site for people to visit.
1.     Target Audience—Twelve fourth grade students will be used for this scenario. The students attend a small Christian private school. There are nine girls and three boys. The students are all nine years old.
2.     Materials—Whiteboard and markers
a.     White board and markers
b.     12 Computers with internet connection
c.     Student writing journals
3.     Objectives—At the end of the scenario the learner will be able to:
a.     Create a new page on their website.
b.     Describe their favorite thing
c.     Design their site to include one picture
d.     Analyze new information on other’s blogs and comment appropriately
4.     Procedure—
a.     Write instructions on the board.
                                              i.     Turn computers on
                                            ii.     Go to students.weebly.com
                                          iii.     Log in
                                            iv.     Wait patiently J
b.     Tell students that they will be allowed to talk to each other through out this process. Encourage the students to ask each other questions; For example: “How did you get that picture to look like that?” Remember, no talking while teacher is talking.
c.     Demonstrate, if possible, how to select the “pages” tab.
d.     Once on the “Pages” tab is open, students should select the “Add Page” button. This button is orange and rectangular.
e.     They will now need to name the page. The default setting for the name is New Page. The name should be something about their favorite thing.
f.      Once the page has been named, the students will need to select save settings. If the student leaves the page without saving, they will have to start the process over.
g.     When the saving is complete, the students will have a new tab to select from their home page.
h.    Students will go to their new page and “drag and drop” the element that they would like to start with. The students will be told to begin with writing. This means that they can select paragraph or paragraph with picture.
i.      Students will then begin writing about their favorite thing. If the students have already written about it in their writing journals, they will be able to copy the information instead of trying to think of information on the spot.
j.      When the writing is complete, the students will be given the opportunity to browse the pictures and videos available to them. They will do this by using the drag and drop method to drop the element (picture or video) into the page.
k.    When the student feels that their page is complete, they will create a new post on their blog page. The blog post will tell their readers that they have created a new page and to go check it out.
l.      Students will be given time to analyze each other’s new pages and post comments to each other through the blog post created above.
5.     Web 2.0 Tool—The web 2.0 tool used for this RILS is www.weebly.com.  This tool is used to allow students to create their own websites. The websites that the students create are password protected and user friendly.
6.     Social Participation/ Social Learning—The students will be allowed to talk to each other throughout this entire scenario. This will allow the students to see what other classmates are doing and ask them to show how they can do it themselves. The students are always excited to show each other something new. The end result of the scenario is for the students to explore each classmate’s new page and then tell them what they think by posting a comment to their blog.
7.     Making Connections—
a.     Previous knowledge in order to create new knowledge. Students will be using their knowledge of how to create a website with a welcome and how to create a blog page to help them with this scenario. Students will also be using their typing lessons to help them while writing about their favorite thing.
b.     Something that is relevant for them—The students will be writing about something that they are passionate about. There will be no limitations set on what this favorite this is because every learner is unique. Learning to blog also teaches the students a valuable way to share their thoughts with the public.
c.     With a local or global audience—For the safety of the students, their websites are not global. The website password has been given to the parents. Some students have given the password to their family members and these family members have been able to post their thoughts on the student’s blog. It gives the students a special feeling to know that others are reading their work.
8.     Create/ Produce—The end product will be a new page on the student’s website. As well as a blog thread about their new page.
